Alcohol licence

The serving of alcoholic beverages to the public or private parties for payment requires a licence.

How to apply

Send your application to the municipality in which your business will operate. The application fee is determined by the municipality and is charged to cover the cost of processing the application.

When a licence is granted, an annual supervision fee is also charged for the municipality's work with the supervision and inspection of the serving premises.

About the licence

An alcohol licence from the municipality is required to serve alcoholic beverages. The licence can apply to the serving of alcohol to both the public and private parties, for serving all year round or annually for a certain period of time (permanent alcohol licence); or for a particular time period or an individual occasion (temporary alcohol licence).

Requirements
To obtain an alcohol licence, you must be 20 years of age or older and show that you are suitable for conducting these activities in light of your personal and financial circumstances.  This means that you must be and have been financially responsible in recent years, and you may not have been convicted of any crime in recent years. To obtain an alcohol licence, you must also take a test to show that you have knowledge of Sweden's alkohollagen (Alcohol Act). The municipality processes your application and is responsible for this testing being carried out.

There are also requirements on the serving premises in order to obtain an alcohol licence. These requirements include the premises being registered as a food establishment and that a varied range of prepared food can be served there.

The licence cannot be transferred to another party or to different premises without an application being made to the municipality.

For complete information, please contact the relevant municipality, as requirements and fees vary.

Permit issuer and supervision

The municipality issues the licence and is the supervisory authority.
