The trade policy between the US and the EU

The conditions for trade with the United States have changed both rapidly and significantly. By keeping track of developments, you as a business owner can better manage the challenges that arise. Here, we summarise the most important events. This page is updated continuously

During January, US President has made statements about possible new tariffs against the EU, including Sweden. At present, no decisions have been taken and no new agreements are in place. Much still remains uncertain. Against this background, the National Board of Trade Sweden has prepared updated information on the countermeasures the EU may consider in response to these recent developments.

The EU and the United States have reached a political agreement under which most goods exported from the EU are now subject to a 15 percent tariff. The agreement was announced on July 27, 2025. You can read more details about the agreement at the National Board of Trade Sweden.

On August 29, 2025, the US removed the possibility of duty-free imports from EU countries for goods worth less than $800, the so-called De Minimis exemption.

The removal of the duty-free values ​​means that all shipments must be declared to customs regardless of value, origin or mode of transport. The goods are subject to duty, tax and other fees when imported into the US, which may affect, for example, international postal services and online retailers.

Facts: Trade between the US and the EU

Goods

  • The US is the largest partner for exports of goods to the EU and the second largest for imports of goods.
  • The EU was the second largest partner for exports of goods to the US in 2022 and the largest for imports of goods.

Services

  • The US was the largest partner for exports of services to the EU in 2023, as well as for imports of services.
  • The EU was the largest partner for exports of services to the US in 2022 and also its largest for imports of services.

Consequences of tariffs

When the US introduces tariffs on products from EU companies, they become more expensive and therefore risk being sold less. When the EU responds by introducing tariffs on US products, they become more expensive for EU consumers.
