Residence permit for citizens within the EU/EEA and the Nordic countries

Are you considering starting a company or selling your services in Sweden? As an EU citizen, you have the same rights and obligations as a Swedish entrepreneur.

EU/EEA citizens do not need a residence permit

An EU/EEA citizen has the right to live in an EU country which is not their country of origin, as long as they can support themselves. This means that you can stay in Sweden without a residence permit. You also have the right to start and run a private business.

In order to be registered in the Swedish Population Register (Folkbokföringsregistret), you need to move to, and intend to live in, Sweden for at least one year. In addition, you must provide evidence that you have a right of residence or a residence permit for at least one year. When you have been registered with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) you will receive your personal identity number (personnummer).

Contact the Swedish Tax Agency

If you are a sole trader and want to apply for F-tax approval and VAT registration at the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket), you will need to send a certified copy of your passport or another ID document. You also need documents proving freedom of debt in the country you have lived in during the past two years.

If you stay here for more than six months (i.e. you have unlimited tax liability but are not listed in the Swedish Population Register) and do not have a Swedish personal identity number or coordination number, you will be assigned a coordination number when you are approved for F-tax.

If you stay here for less than six months (i.e. you have limited tax liability), you will be assigned a special registration number (a GD number) when you are approved for F-tax.

If you will be staying in Sweden for one year or more, you must register your move to Sweden. If you meet the requirements, you will be listed in the Swedish Population Register and assigned a personal identity number.

Family members from a country outside of the EU/EEA

If you have the right to reside in Sweden through work, studies, being self-employed or because you have sufficient means to support yourself, your family who is a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA can apply for a residence card.

If you, as an EU/EEA citizen, do not meet the requirements for the right of residence, your family will need to apply for a residence permit if you want to bring them to Sweden. In order for your family to receive a residence permit, you must be able to show that you can support yourself in Sweden through work, studies or sufficient means.
