Protect your trademark
A trademark is a characteristic of a product or service. If you want to protect your trademark in Sweden, you apply for protection at the Swedish Intellectual Property Office (PRV). A Swedish trademark registration is valid for ten years and can then be extended a further ten years at a time.
What the protection means
With a trademark registration, you get the exclusive right to use the trademark for selected goods and services. No one else may then use it in their business or marketing for similar goods and services. This will also make it easier for you to act against pirated copies at the border and prevent other types of infringement. Through registration, you can also be sure that you yourself are not infringing on someone else's trademark.

Different types of trademarks
There are different types of trademarks that you can seek protection for. Some common examples are words, figures or logos and sounds. But it is also possible to register designs (ornament marks), combinations of sound and image (multimedia marks) and colours or combinations of colours (colour marks). At PRV you can read more about the different types and see even more examples.

Your trademark has value
If you have registered protection, you can sell or license your trademark. Trademark protection can also make it easier to find investors and business partners. A trademark can be worth large sums, even more than a fleet of machinery or production facilities. A protected trademark can therefore increase the value of your company.
Register your trademark with PRV
Before you apply for trademark protection, you need to decide on some important questions. PRV has developed a handy guide, where you can prepare for your application step by step.
The difference from a company name
A trademark is applied for at PRV. It is a characteristic that distinguishes your specific product or service and distinguishes it from others. A company name is the name of a registered company that is registered by the Swedish Companies Registration Office.
