Help choosing a business name

Check if the name you're thinking of is already taken by another company. You can also get help creating a good name and describing your business accurately.

  1. Help creating a good business name

A business name should not only describe the business

A business name should not only describe the business, for example, Bicycle Workshop. Other businesses in the same industry must also be able to use the term "bicycle workshop."

A business gets protection for its name in combination with the description of its operations.

    Protect your business name

The Swedish Companies Registration Office evaluates each name proposal individually

When you submit your name proposal, the Swedish Companies Registration Office's case officers assess, in each specific case, whether there is a risk of confusion with another business name. It always involves an overall assessment where they consider:

    • how similar the business names are
    • whether the businesses operate in the same industry
    • whether the businesses are closely located geographically.

  2. Help describing the business

Your business name is protected within the industry you operate in.

The protection for your business name applies within the industry you operate in. Therefore, you need to describe your business activities clearly. For example, it is not enough to write that you will engage in trade or consulting, you need to specify what you will be trading in or what kind of consulting services you will offer.

Do not use words like "etc." or "and so on" in your business description, as these words usually need clarification.

    Describe the business activities clearly

Some activities are so extensive that you may need to specify the direction your company will take. For example, "industrial operation" needs to be clarified to indicate whether it involves mechanical engineering, paper industry, textile industry, or any other form of industry.

Examples of activities that need further clarification

The examples in the list do not cover all activities and industries.

  3. About the service

The service uses an AI model that analyzes the similarity between existing company names and the company name you are searching for. The list of matches is sorted by how similar the company names are. The data comes from the Swedish Companies Registration Office's register and is updated once a day.

Company names can sometimes contain personal data, such as a person's name.

    Search Tips

Here are some tips on how to search to find out whether a company with the same or a similar name already exists.

You can search without worrying about uppercase or lowercase letters. For example, a search for Company AB will also return results for COMPANY AB. The list of results is sorted based on how similar the company names are.

If you want to make a custom search, you can use search characters together with the prefix "filter:". In that case, the results list will be sorted alphabetically instead.

    Search characters

You can use the following characters:

    • * replaces zero or more characters
    • ? replaces a single character.

You can also combine the search symbols using a space. See the examples.

    Examples:

    • filter:my*ab will return results such as Myab AB and My company AB
    • filter:my?b ab will return results such as Myab AB, but not My company AB
    • filter:my*company* will return results such as My company AB
    • filter:*myab will return results such as Aktiebolaget Myab
    • filter:mitt *ab will return results such as ”Mitt företag AB”, but not ”Mittab AB
    • filter:* företag * will return results such as ”Mitt företag AB”, but not ”Storföretaget AB
    • filter:Mitt * will return results such as ”Mitt företag i Sundsvall AB”, but not ”Mittab i Sundsvall AB”.
